‘The Government has no intentions to devolve Corporation Tax to the Senedd’ as Welsh Parliament votes in defiance
Post Body

The Welsh Parliament has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a motion that ‘demands’ the Welsh Government request ‘the devolution of Corporation Tax’. The Libertarian Party Cymru and Mudiad Pobl Cymru voted alongside the Welsh Government.

The motion also garnered the support of current Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats and former Leader of the Welsh Conservatives RhysGwenythIV.

The Welsh Government had expressed a will to ‘negotiate a broader devolution settlement’ including ‘Corporation Tax, Sunday trading, Air Passenger Duty’ and ‘S4C’ in a Programme for Government published in June.

The Model Surrey Comet understands the coalition agreement of the Conservative-Libertarian government states the government will only agree to the ‘devolution of S4C and Sunday Trading laws’ and ‘beyond what is explicitly mentioned in the document, there will be no further devolution of powers to any devolved government.’

The First Minister of Wales Secretary_Salami described 'a strong mandate for the devolution of Corporation [Tax] to Senedd' and announcing a desire to meet with representatives of Her Majesty's Government 'to discuss the matter as soon as possible.'

Speaking to the Surrey Comet plebit2020 described the result as ‘the right move’ and suggested the Welsh government will be ‘reaching out to Westminster to put a deal on the table’. If such a deal is not forthcoming, the Plaid Pobl Member of the Senedd ‘will seek support in Westminster’. Leader of the Libertarian Party Cymru urged Her Majesty’s Government to ‘respect the will of the Welsh people expressed through their elected parliament’.

Despite government policy to implement the devolution of Corporation Tax to Northern Ireland - a spokesperson representing Her Majesty’s Government dismissed the motion - declaring ‘the Government has no intentions to devolve Corporation Tax to the Senedd’.
