Recent events have exposed the racist underbelly of New Zealand, but despite it all - it seems temper have finally cooled.
Young Alliance co-leaders Simisone Brownilagi and Christophai Bishop'atua praised the words and actions of Alliance co-leader u/TheTrashMan_10 at a recent vigil.
They pointed towards this speech as the first step in the reconciliation process which needs to occur in order for trust for law enforcement to be restored in minority communities.
Brownilagi is quoted as saying "The first step to dismantling these oppressive colonialist institutions, is acknowledgement of past wrongs and a coherent plan to move forward. We welcome the sentiments expressed by such a prominent member of the Alliance - but we maintain that words without actions are meaningless and now we must be as ambitious with our actions as we are with our words."
Others were not convinced. New Zealand Police Association president Jeremy Montgomery lambasted the Alliance - decrying the "Spineless socialists, leaving the police out to dry whilst protecting the very criminals threatening the safety of ordinary New Zealanders."
Montgomery praised the actions of National leadership in providing a proactive and quick response to the crisis. Asserting that "the only real leadership shown in this shoddy state of affairs, has been from the party in opposition."
Reactions are mixed across the public sphere. Many have praised the practical trashman's willingness to talk at the grass level with constituents however questions have been raised around the willingness of the government to throw the police under the bus, with many Officer frustrated at the apparent lack of support from the government.
One thing is for sure, in one of their biggest tests this term - it seems the government has passed with flying colours.
