I am pleased to see the findings of the police report into the death of Judithsone Iosefa Malietoa Collin'sio published, and real action taken. I am glad to see that the super-intendents of both the Counties Manukau and Canterbury police boards are now out of a job, owing to the negligence of them in the case of Constable Pickle. However, I hope that this is not the end. Investigations must be made into the culture of both police boards - especially Counties Manukau - to thoroughly investigate and purge issues of corruption and negligence that allowed Pickle to remain hired as a constable.
On the topic of him, I am pleased to see the long-overdue sacking of Constable Pickle. While I am relieved to see that Pickle at least had some reason for the use of force against Collin'sio, I am concerned that the restraining action of Pickle may have been disproportionate to Collin'sio's "resistance". Further investigation is necessary to ascertain the nature of the event, however, I am glad to see that Pickle is no longer with the police force.
I appreciate the committment from police to further scrutinise and improve how they respond to drug-related offences in the future. Ultimately, I have hope as a result of these findings that things will get better. I hope that the police force remains transparent, and I hope that serious reforms are made to police management and in how police respond to arrests.
