Outrage has erupted throughout South Auckland today following the death of Samoan human rights activist Judithsone Iosefa Malietoa Collin'sio outside her home earlier today.
Police were called to Collin'sio's small Otahuhu apartment this morning after complaints were made surrounding potential drug activity in the area. In the course of the arresting action, Collins received a blow to the head resulting in a loss of consciousness. Paramedics arrived at the scene, but were unable to resuscitate Collin'sio.
The official Police spokesperson declined to comment due to "the delicate nature of the investigation", however the Herald understands that the arresting officer has a history of misconduct within the force.
The hashtag #JusticeforJudith has been trending nationwide, with many calling for a overhaul to the policing system within New Zealand. Critics have pointed out that the tragic events of this morning have revealed the need for more police funding and better training but many in the polynesian community are skeptical. Young Greens leader Waiere Tumua spoke briefly with the Herald earlier, remarking "The Police are a Pakeha institution first and foremost, until we abolish this corrupt institution our people will continue to bleed on the streets they built".
Protests are rumored to be planned for next week after Collin'sio is laid to rest at her family home in Apia.
Judith was an active member of 1Love, a group dedicated to advancing minority representation within an array of educational disciplines. Furthermore, she was a vocal advocate for the advancement of womens rights throughout the Pacific, most recently overseeing the Samoan elections as a neutral observer. She is survived by her husband Semisi, and their children Jesse and Wendy.
