Veteran MP imnofox announces run for co-leadership

Post Body

Following the announcement of BHjr132's resignation, imnofox has announced his run for the co-leadership of the Green Party.

"We all know that New Zealand is blessed with one of the world’s most beautiful natural environments. We also know that this paradise is slipping away from us. Government after Government has ignored our most pressing environmental concerns. The Greens are supposed to be that political party that champions a politics of sustainability, putting the environment first."

"In a beautiful blog post, former OG MP Nandor Tanczos asked 'does a commitment to social responsibility mean the Greens are left of Labour? Or a left-wing party at all? What does it even mean to be ‘left wing’ in Aotearoa New Zealand today?'

"'In fact, if you look at the fundamentals, there is very little genuine political difference between National and Labour. What we have now is more in the way of different political clans, held together by a sense of shared identity (often inherited) rather than by any coherent political core.'"

"'If you look at the most fundamental Green concerns: climate change, protection of waterways, child poverty, growing inequality, protecting civil and human rights, tāngata whenua rights, the last Labour government was barely more progressive than National. In fact the main argument used against ever forming a coalition with National – that their economic agenda is fundamentally at odds with a Green agenda – applies just as strongly to Labour.'"

"'A left / right continuum is simply incapable of representing Green politics. Our most defining issues don’t figure on it at all and neither are the solutions to them a simple application of any one ideology, whether ecosocialism or green capitalism. Both the left and the right have valuable contributions to make to this discussion, but more important for the Greens is the opportunity to articulate uniquely Green solutions as the third point in a left / right / green triangle.'"

"Nandor spoke the truth. What have we seen over the last many terms? The same old economic arguments playing out, the same old bickering and spluttering as the issues we care about get watered down by either side."

"The Greens need to reclaim our space as a party of the environment, of Green politics, not left politics or right politics. Tying ourselves to the left wing tribe has only made us reliant on success when Labour's in a rough patch, or even trying to hold on to a confused coalition of disoriented socialists. It's not a realistic or attainable strategy for the protection of our planet."

"For years the Greens have tried to dominate the 'left', as if that was a strategy to success. Instead of seeking out new constituencies- like small business owners, seniors, conservatives. We all have an interest in a clean environment and a healthy planet, not just unionists and lefties."

"No doubt my opponents will paint this is a 'pitch to the centre', but that is a fundamental misunderstanding of what Green politics are. The very notion of a centre sitting conveniently between Labour and National is irrelevant when we locate ourselves on a triangle, Green politics being that third point."

"The Greens have learned a lot in government and leading in opposition, and finally we ought to have the self-confidence and the assurance with our vision that we're willing to break out of the convenient and comfortable alliance on the 'left' and start working with everybody and anybody for the sake of our goals and vision."

"I'm running for co-leader on the platform of widening our horizons and doing what previous co-leaders and previous caucuses never good: open our arms to change. It's time to go beyond tribalism and build relationships and connections."

"I have the experience and the vision to take the party forward, to a new age of collaboration and consensus decision-making. These were the ways of operating championed by our forebears, Jeanette Fitzsimons and Rod Donald."

"We can return to our roots, and grow all the more stronger from them. I believe we can do that- we must do that."
