The Rt Hon Sir silicon_based_life has given the Electoral Commission the formal direction and authority to conduct the by-election in the Northland electorate on Saturday 14 March 2020.
The schedule for the by-election will be as follows:
Period for nominations- 12pm 7 March 2020-12pm 8 March 2020
Period for campaigning- 10 March 2020-13 March 2020
Election day- 14 March 2020
Each candidate will have 2 posts to use per day. Registered political parties without a candidate in the Hauraki by-election may use 1 post to endorse a candidate. Campaigning will take place on /r/MNZByElection.
Please note that as per Section 197 of the Elections Act 1993, a person is prohibited from doing anything which "with the intention of influencing the elector or advising the elector as to the elector’s vote...at any time on polling day before the close of the poll."
Additionally, a person is committing the offence of treating if they "directly or indirectly gives or provides, or pays wholly or in part the expense of giving or providing, any food, drink, entertainment, or provision to or for any person" for the purpose of campaigning for an election.
A person is also committing the offence of bribery by giving "any money or procures any office to or for any voter, or to or for any other person on behalf of any voter, or to or for any other person, in order to induce any voter to vote or refrain from voting."
Electoral penalties may apply if you commit any of these actions.
