Dodgy politics on day 1 bolster Green calls for electoral reform
Post Body

"To have two defections just 1 day after their election is the height of dodgy politics, and really does emphasise the need for electoral reform." says Green Party Justice spokesperson, imnofox.

The Green Party campaigned on giving voters the ability to recall their local electorate MP by petitioning for a recall election.

"This will keep local representatives accountable throughout the term, not just every election cycle".

"The fact that these two MPs publicised their defection only 24 hours after the election results were published really does raise a lot of questions, given they had just been elected on very different platforms as members of very different parties" says imnofox.

The Green Party have long stood for appropriate decision-making, and question how radically changing the proportions of this parliament contrary to the votes of the people just two days earlier is at all justified.

"It is absolutely astounding to have a political party in parliament that chose to piggyback off of the hard work of National and Green volunteers, rather than contest the election as 'Alliance'. One out of eight Green voters and one our of seven National voters have had their ballots commandeered by a party nobody voted for. If parties don't want to get a democratic mandate, they ought to stay out of parliament until they have one- rather than just leech off of voters who voted for different parties".

"If MPs want to pretend that they know better than the people, and refuse to get a democratic mandate, voters should have the right to demand a recall election. That will continue to be a major priority this term. If politicians back democratic accountability, they will support this necessary reform" says imnofox.
