Government's abuse of the parliamentary process "an affront to democracy", says Greens
Post Body

speaking to media on the tiles, Green Party co-leader /u/imnofox lambasted the government's shocking abuse of urgency the last two days

"Yesterday we saw them rush through substantial legislation under urgency, to silence the public's opposition. Now today, they're doing the same to rush through some of the most significant reforms to superannuation in the last few decades." says /u/imnofox.

"This is legislation that doesn't even start coming into force for 17 years. The government is rushing legislation through, under urgency, silencing the public's opposition to have their say, for a bill that won't start coming into force for almost two decades. This is an absolute joke." says /u/imnofox.

"Urgency is an impressive power that governments have to use when they see fit. It's a power that should not be abused. The abuses of urgency throughout this term, especially in regards to the Superannuation entitlement bill, are a blatant abuse of that power. It is nothing less than an affront to democracy." says /u/imnofox.

"People deserve the opportunity to have their thoughts and views known on every piece of legislation we pass in this house, and that's especially true for substantial pieces of legislation like the Superannuation entitlement age bill, a bill that seeks to radically affect the retirement of all New Zealanders." continues /u/imnofox.

"The Green Party were shocked when we saw the last National government abuse urgency in this way, and are shocked again to see the Liberal-National coalition, with the help of Reform, continue abusing urgency over the last two terms. With that in mind, we are committed to reforming the use of urgency, to prevent the consistently shocking abuses of that important process like those we have seen the last few days. While the Liberal-Reform coalition seeks to silence the views of voters, the Greens remain committed to transparent and accountable politics. Thank you." finishes /u/imnofox.
