On slater's online blog, he releases a final campaign pledge, before circulating it around the internet via email.
Iād like to take the time to respond to the campaign that has been run by my National Party opponent, superpacman04. In his opening campaign speech, my opponent superpacman04 said that heās ādoing my best to hold the Alliance government to account.ā
I do believe that no matter which government is in power, we should be held accountable, in debate, in voting. Strong accountability is important, and when it works, everyone wins. It allows citizens to learn about the government's performance and how to seek redress when things go wrong. It guarantees that politicians and government officials behave in the best interests of the people they are responsible for. Accountability is a component of effective governance, and it can improve the public's perception of the government's credibility and legitimacy, and this comes from both the opposition, and the press as well as specific accountability organisations. I would take pride in an opposition that truly engaged with the government, however I simply donāt believe this is the case.
Superpacman04 says heās been doing āhis bestā? Letās have a look at his record shall we? Since August 4, nearly 2 months ago, superpacman has shown up twice. Twice, to speak his mind on the parliament floor to speak his mind on government business. Meanwhile, Iāve shown up, on the floor, replying to debates, asking questions, and making my case for legislation for more than double what he has. Iāve attended 82% of divisions, while in the same time, he attended only 64%. That means from every 3 votes, he hasnāt shown up to represent you. He hasnāt shown up to represent the votes of the people who elected him. Itās a true privilege to be elected, and itās a failure to have a poor turnout.
If he wonāt show up for you, why should you show up for him?
I pledge to you now that I will endeavour to have no longer than 90% turnout, and I will be there, advocating for the community in debates, in question time, at least once a week. Finally, I will release a monthly letter to update my constituents on my work as an MP, to provide you with accountability, and ensure that I do not treat my position as an entitlement.
In this monthly letter, I will outline my reasons for voting, and debating on certain, key legislation, as well as serving a purpose, and will update the community on a variety of local events.
Folks, I joined Alliance, and the Country Party, because Alliance has a plan, and unlike the National candidate claims, we do have a plan for the housing crisis. By placing a tax on unproductive land, through the introduction of a Risk-free rate of return method tax, a RFRM. This ends tax loopholes used by the wealthy, who have stored their riches in property. We will have land banking no longer! The implementation of this tax will go towards the end of the trend of rapidly increasing housing prices, and support our young students in finding a home.
Speaking of students, a vote for Alliance is a vote to develop a comprehensive program to buy up unused private properties for development into mid to high density social housing, taking things out of the hands of profit and into government hands where the state can combat homelessness. Social housing is an vital element of the housing system since it attempts to provide an affordable, secure housing alternative that responds to local community needs and encourages tenant engagement.
Alliance has a critical opportunity to create huge change, and with each of your votes you hold the key to this sweeping, radical change.
One of the great things about Alliance is that with the Country Party, and through our representation in parliament, and in the Alliance caucus, we can ensure rural Aotearoa is not left behind.
Climate action and farming are not often used interchangeably, but they can be, and in my opinion should be. Alliance has a plan to create an agricultural industry that benefits people, the environment, and farmers. It is possible to sustain a robust and resilient system that benefits farmers and producers while also conserving our land and water by making wise decisions today. Governments have handled agriculture as if it were a factory, prioritising quantity above quality. It harms our land, water, wildlife, and the environment. Farmers have been left without the tools they need to adapt to climate and market changes, and our communities have been cut off from the secure and equitable food and fibre production systems they require to flourish.
Itās been a wonderful campaign, and Iād like to thank you all for your time here today.
Remember as you go to the ballot box tomorrow, a brighter, better, stronger, just future is possible. He waka eke noa.
