Before model-putrid's speech, volunteers for the party postered the town in the morning and the day before with this poster.
Kia ora, tÄnÄ koutou, hello everyone! It's a pleasure to be here today as your Pirate Party candidate for the seat of Wellington. You know, even though Woodville is a part of the Wellington electorate, not many people here are all that connected with Wellington. Most people here, if anything, might have jobs in Palmerston North, or drive there for groceries or things that Woodville doesn't have. Why would you take the long drive down to Wellington or even Masterton down State Highway 2, even if the drive to Palmerston North means you have to weave around back roads?
But right here in Woodville is one of the nation's most unique and innovative pieces of rail technology - a balloon rail loop, which allows trains to turn around without even stopping. It could connect Woodville seamlessly with Wellington, Masterton, Hawke's Bay, and Palmerston North. But instead, it lays in disuse, being slowly left to rot. Since the trains stop at Masterton, this one-of-a-kind rail infrastructure is abandoned.
Why should it stop in Masterton? Why can't we have rail connections? You know, I respect this government for a lot of their investments in railways across New Zealand, I think they're doing an OK job, but the only investment they've made on the Wairarapa line is to electrify it up to Masterton. Bringing trains up to Woodville will be great for people up here and for our local economy, especially given the battering local businesses have taken during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Pirate Party manifesto was released yesterday, and in it, we detail our promise to bring back train services to Woodville. We will continue the government's electrification project by ensuring that the rest of the line past Masterton can run on electric power. Not only will we reopen services to Woodville, but we'll also bring back stations at EketÄhuna and PahÄ«atua. When all is said and done, the Wairarapa Connection services will not stop at Masterton, but go up here to Woodville to end in Palmerston North, giving locals here an easy connection to both Palmerston North, Masterton, and Wellington.
If I am elected as your local MP, I promise that I will fight for the basic connections like these that residents deserve. We already have the track and infrastructure in place, it's just the trains that have been axed by prior governments, who put profit and a budget surplus over the people of Woodville.
