Kia ora koutou, everyone thank you for coming out to this event today.
Whilst this campaign has been a tough one, I would like to thank everyone who has been involved, so far it seems that this election period has been successful for all those involved.
Having talked to the party leadership I can confirm that they are extremely proud of all of the candidates, and volunteers that have been involved in making sure that ACT controls a significant fraction of the seats in Parliament, and for the most part this campaign has been successful.
It is extremely important for us to secure those last few votes, from undecided voters though, so today is still extremely important. For this reason, I will touch on some policy that is extremely important to me, as has been seen through the last term with this subject making up a significant amount of the bills that I authored the last term, drug reform.
Drug reform is an extremely hot button topic in New Zealand at the moment, with the referendum that took place recently being at the fore-front of many people's minds. As the results were so close, the ACT party felt as though it was important that there was some reform of policy regarding drugs in New Zealand. This is the reason that the ACT members bill decriminalised all Class C drugs and re-classified Cannabis as a class C drug. The first member's bill was shortly followed by a second, in which Cathinones, LSD and MDMA were also decriminalised.
Both of these bills mean that there can be a saving on spending for New Zealand police, which is significant considering the current state of the economy, and the reduction of spending on unessisary things. In this case, there is low risk regarding all of those substances in Class C, and the continued policing of these substances is no more than an over reach of the liberties of New Zealanders.
As you can see from how long I waffled on this subject, it is something that I am extremely passionate about, and it is extremely important that ACT continues to protect the liberties of all New Zealanders who decide to partake in using these substances.
Thank you all for coming along today, and I look forward to continuing my work on drug reform during the next term in parliament!
