Post Body

Meeting with business representatives of the Employers and Manufacturer's Association in Auckland, u/SoSaturnistic explains some of his party's plans for the future:

It's great to see everyone here, welcome. I'm glad to see the interest in the way ACT has worked in government to kick-start the recovery following the economic turbulence of COVID-19. Businesses have had to deal with historic uncertainty, have taken substantial losses, and have been asked by government to make substantial sacrifice to first combat the virus and later protect against any community spread. Governments around the world have acted to suit their economic needs in these trying times and ours is no different.

Our guiding has always been to make it easier for the entrepreneur, the job-creator, and those sole traders out there to get out and make it for themselves. We are a party keen on making it easier to let people get ahead, removing unnecessary restrictions, supporting high-quality basic public services, and making engagement with government as simple and uncomplicated as possible.

To these ends, I have worked tirelessly with my colleagues in government as Business Minister to loosen up red tape and unlock the productive potential of our economy. We have delivered market-based reform in the energy sector and ended some of the costly and senseless restrictions on energy extraction and development, a move which will have positive downstream benefits for our economy. We have worked to substantially liberalise our employment laws, making it simpler to find and retain the talent you need at work. We've kept basic workplace protections in place of course but we don't want it to be too difficult to arrange a productive workplace. We have brought in a variety of public investments in the budget, as well as tax relief and controls on debt, to ensure that the wider macroeconomic outlook is positive and we have reformed the tax system to promote investment--take the reforms we spearheaded on local rating. That was a big win for our manufacturers and other capital-intensive businesses.

Our party wants to go further next term. We want to no longer tax profits which are reinvested into firms and we are keen to remove more red tape across the board. We want to loosen up restrictions on foreign capital in this country to make it easier to raise it in New Zealand; currently our regime is among the highest in the world and the difficulty of raising investment here has made it so hard that many simply emigrate to bring their great business ideas elsewhere. We will do away with much of the complexity in our land use system governed under the Resource Management Act and we want to remove several pieces of red tape on innovation, in particular on genetic modification. The last term brought in a number of reforms to revive our 'rockstar economy' and we can continue to push onwards and upwards when it comes to promoting the long-run productivity growth which makes it better to live and work in New Zealand. We will also take a liberal view on our migration needs, being a party that welcomes those who wish to join and contribute to our society. As we re-open to the world, this will be more important and we will have a chance to meet the needs of labour-starved industries.

We have a clear set of goals to build on our achievements we've brought in for business. It is important that we keep a steady hand on the wheel to maintain our recovery in this ever-so-important moment. ACT is that party and we can be trusted. Thank you.

I am always available to discuss policy matters with the business community here in Auckland and if you are interested in what our movement stands for feel free to contact me.
