Help with Forge

I'm trying to get mods working with Forge but am having some difficulty. I have Forge installed and running on 1.8 and I've downloaded several mods for minecraft v 1.8 but they don't seem to be working and they aren't popping up in the mod menu options or anywhere else for that matter. I know this isn't much to work with but I am kinda dumb when it comes to modding. Thanks in advance for any help!
