Modding/Game Development relationship

I'm in the tumult of creating three different video games and going to school to learn more about game development is on the cards, in the meantime I wanted to get my feet wet in the world of modding as it has transferable skills written on it. I've seen some mods for Bethesda games especially that seem to take technical fortitude to execute and I wanted to ask if skills from modding can at all be transferred to creating a video game of any size as well as the rudimentary skills pertaining to modding?
