preview no longer working on the stylesheet editor

i can upload images and save changes just fine, and i can use the redesign theming tools as normal, but all day when i have tried to preview changes to the stylesheet, i get a 500 error. reddit status says all systems are operational, there's no issue with mod permissions, so i'd like to know where this error is coming from and if there's any workaround.
