Hi all,
I have recently started moderating r/r4rbrisbane and we have done a lot to try to clean up the usual spam, scams, and disrespectful behaviour that can plague this type of sub.
However, a couple of times now I've heard about sexual assaults occurring after people on the sub have met. I'm trying to work out what to do both in response to specific reports, and generally on the sub to promote awareness of consent and sexual assault.
In general, we thought about pinning a post on the importance of consent, what it looks like, and what constitutes sexual assault - together with some sexual assault resources from local support groups. My hope is that more visibility on the topic will help.
Some more admin-heavy options might be: giving a positive flair to users who make a self-post on how they practice consent; setting up some sort of buddy system to make sure people have someone to talk to; maintaining a list of users who people had a negative experience with.
Specifically though, if you have a user who makes an allegation against another user, what do you do? On the one hand, it's not like we have volunteer resources to go away and investigate this, nor is it our role or expertise. On the other hand we have a clear risk and it feels like doing nothing is just wrong. I don't see the point in banning the user as they are not posting, but privately messaging people who do post.
Really welcome any thoughts or input.
Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about individual users behaviour outside of reddit.
What I would recommend is taking measures to significantly limit the type of users and the actual content requests that you allow from users.
I moderate r/r4rMelbourne and we have stringent control over the NSFW content and users we allow through the use of automod (to filter content and NSFW posts for manual approve) and u/SafestBot (to remove account from our user pool who use violent/misogynist/degradation communities).
Feel free to reach out if you would like specific help with implementing any measures, have a look through our community for the kind of rules and limits we have in place to help protect users.
