Is this how much it normally costs?
I’m based in California
I just got my whole motor rebuilt on my evo 9 and I wasted about 14k total. A breakdown
I bought a brand new oem short block assembled from Mitsubishi (3,800)
1,390 to get my transmission rebuilt
1,090 to get my cylinder head (valve job) machined.
And then about 5,500 in total parts off STM Such as Gsc billet cams, engine head gasket, spark plugs, walbro 450 pump, jiggly racing valve springs, water pump, case cover oil pump, oil pan, ferrera valves, aem x series gauges and about 30 other oem parts in between(to many to name).
The guy who did the work charged me around 3,500 for all the work.
I feel like it wasn’t worth it but I have a clean title evo 9 with 73k original miles and 2nd owner purchased used at a Mitsubishi dealer with 50k miles in 2010. The car feels brand new and smooth as hell when I drive so I am happy with the result just not the price tag lol
Only thing left is to get it tuned but I was told to break in the new motor for about 500 miles.
Thoughts?
I bought the oem short block assembled so it’s all stock. The guy told me with a stock bottom and gsc cams and injectors I should be able to do around 400 when I get tuned which is all I want. I just want it to be reliable and not blow on me lol
You got head tf up
Honestly you’re better off just buying one rebuilt, here in SOCAL they sell them for about 1,800-2200. I would’ve went that route but i thought that was the only part I needed to replace once I blew it but once I took it my mechanic and told me I also should’ve rebuild the tranny and cylinder head that’s when I wish I would’ve just bought a rebuilt short block to lower the overall price for the rebuild.
I couldn’t really blame him bc I was getting my motor built to a 2.3L at some evo shop but they ended up going out of business and stole a bunch of parts and my evo ended up in one of the mechanics home that used to work there and he just put it back together to the best of his abilities and then I took it to another evo shop to get it checked out and tuned (another shitty evo shop) and the guy even stole my oem cat without me knowing until months later but the car seemed to be okay after the tune which is when I then sold it to my cousin in a working condition and then a month later was when he started complaining that it started to make a weird knocking noise and then it blew. So I couldn’t really blame him because I already had my doubts the motor was put back together properly. It’s a long ass story lol
Long story short, I got screwed over by almost every evo shop in SOCAL and I got my parts stolen and the motor got put back by random pieces when a shop went out of business and then the motor started doing a knocking noise before it blew so I just decided to rebuild the whole motor since I didn’t know what else got screwed with when I was trying to build my motor to a 2.3L.
Haha I actually just ordered a tubular manifold off map performance to make it look nicer before I get it tuned and I’m relocating the battery to the trunk and putting a short route ets upper intercooler pipe
It’s not to bad but it does have a few scratches here and there, I’m actually doing that next and taking it to a body shop to get everything fixed and resprayed and make it look new. Once I decided to rebuild the motor I kinda already signed up to rebuild the whole car so its to late for me to back out lol
