Just found out about this topic, this sub, now I'm scared of hiking; any precautions, recommendations? If that counts, I live in Ottawa, ON

Post Body

I go hiking quite frequently, I stay on the trails; I take basic precautions: energy bars, water, cell phone power bank, bear pepper spray in the case of encounters with an animal, and leave lots of time to be able to leave before dark. (basic precautions not accounting for threats described in this sub :/)

Is this enough? Are you aware of such things happening in my area? Any other precaution to take?
