I'm interested in knowing how many of you actually walk the walk. It's all well and good saying that you support female supremacy, and that you super duper believe in it, but have you actually done anything to advance it?
About a month ago the company I work for started fleshing out a new team. I was invited to apply for the lead position, and so I did as it would be a promotion. However, when I learned that the only other person to apply was my female colleague, I voluntarily dropped out. I made some excuse about not feeling up to it, and that I felt like I need more experience first - it's transparently a lie as I've been here long enough to have the experience, and have successfully done a similar role before.
I was told by multiple men that dropping out was a mistake, that I was definitely going to get the job, I was a perfect fit, blah blah. Honestly that only confirmed that I did the right thing. I don't deserve to take the lead position away from a woman.
So fast forward to this week when we're finishing up our external interviews for the more junior positions. Unfortunately in tech we don't get many women applying for roles, but we did have some. On paper the women that did apply weren't the best candidates. However I also know that I must be missing something, and that can't possibly be true. I'm convinced I'm just too stupid to notice why those women are better candidates. So I put my weight behind them, and rejected the men.
Unfortunately I'm not the only person grading the candidates, so I can't guarantee the ones that deserve the job will get it. But I'm going to do all I can to make it happen. Can you say you're doing the same?
