It’s been a little over 2 months since I had my Mirena IUD removed. You can read the full post in my profile and comments but to summarize: inserted after childbirth, had 2 iuds total, symptoms included incessant weight gain, inability to lose weight, and in my later years, extreme depression, anxiety and symptoms of bipolar. I removed my IUD and had almost immediate results.
Now for the update: I am menstruating on my own! I had some initial spotting shortly after removal, and began tracked my cycle using oura/natural cycles (I am not going on any form of medical BC moving forward). My first “cycle” was approximately 45 days. So far my period has been relatively similar to what I remember (light-med flow, some clotting, some discomfort from cramps).
The after effects of removal have continued - in total I have lost around 30 pounds, went down almost 2 pant sizes, and feeling a lot less inflamed. I work out low impact 4-5 times a week, walk outside 2-3 times, but mostly just listen to my body and try to move at least for 45 mins a day if I can. My diet is pretty average - I try to cook at home as much as possible, but I do still eat out sometimes. In the beginning I was really strict, I have now relaxed into a more comfortable routine. I still intermittent fast 16:8 regularly.
Mental health: I have not experienced the intense symptoms I had on the Mirena. I did not have a “Mirena Crash”. My sex drive came back. I feel a lot more in control of my mind and emotions.
I am feeling a lot better about things and very happy with my progress.
What’s next: I am still dealing with a hormonal imbalance and some other health issues I am taking supplements for to hopefully improve. My health care provider has been a huge help in giving me hope for further improving and maintaining this drastic lifestyle change. I’m running a 5k at the end of the year (my goal is to just finish!)
Happy to answer any questions about my experience, and hope this helps others.
