Governor Dayton's folks have asked the Feds for an extension. Which, if approved, would allow our State IDs to be used until our Real ID system is ready.
But the TSA has not yet formally responded to the extension, and if they reject it, there is going to be a run on passports and real IDs, as the TSA will not accept MN DLs even for US flights starting Jan 23rd 2018.
Do yourself a favor and just get a passport now if you plan on flying anywhere at all in 2018.
A passport is usually easier (in terms of requirements) and faster to apply for than a Real ID license anyway (there are far more post offices than Real ID DMVs at the moment).
Also, a valid passport makes getting a Real ID license much easier (as it can be used for almost all of the requirements except MN residency).
