minecraft hardcore startup

Hello all, i've tried 3 times a hardcore world but i die very fast everytime.
Whats the best startup when you start a hardcore world. I always build the house first with everything already before even mining for diamond. And after few hours i die because i dont have good gear.
So whats best? Build house first or go right into mining in search for diamond and build the house later.
Help would be mucb appreciated.
