Are there any large downsides to using newer non-recommended builds of Bukkit?

I've been using the recommended releases for some time now, but I always enjoy staying on the bleeding edge as long as it's not going to totally screw me over.

Since I'm running a private server with only three other friends, I don't have any great expectations to stay up and bug free, but I still don't want to screw up the experience for myself and my friends simply because I want to stay updated.

Long question short: has anyone else had experience with using the development releases of Bukkit? Are there benefits? Any big downfalls?
