Why am I hearing random explosions?

So Im doing this thing where I gather resources the first day then head underground never to come up again. Recently I started hearing random explosions on the surface. My base is close to the surface(3-5 blocks at its ceiling) but the floor is at least 20 blocks from the surface. Im sure its not creapers since creapers dont blow up on their own. Does anyone have any idea what they are?
