I just relistened to Eminem's "Stan" for the first time in ages.

Post Body

It was on the "Millennial" playlist on YouTube Music.

I bought the MMLP way back when it came out. I even bought Dido's album because of it. I'm pretty sure I worked at Sam Goody at the time. I was an out gay teenager and I remember all the homophobic controversies around Eminem and how polarizing he was.

However, I don't remember the gay undertones of Stan, and after listening to it during my evening dog walk tonight, I literally shed a couple of tears. It's such a sad song. The internalized homophobia of a questioning youth, the self-harm, the obsessive search for affirmation. It hit hard—there were many parts of Stan I could relate to. Despite its sadness, I'm glad it came on; it was nice to reflect on.
