This is probably going to be a bit controversial, but I’m going to make my case here anyways…
While the Coast Guard is considered a branch by the DoD (literally on its website), it’s classified under the DHS. I am by no means saying that it isn’t a branch, but I’d like to state my case as to why it shouldn’t be classified as a branch of the military and should be recognized and labeled as a federal paramilitary organization.
A military is defined as “a heavily armed, highly organized force primarily intended for warfare,” while a paramilitary is defined as “an organization whose structure, tactics, training, subculture, and (often) function are similar to those of a professional military, but is not part of a country's official or legitimate armed forces.” To continue on the paramilitary aspect, “Paramilitary units carry out duties that a country's military or police forces are unable or unwilling to handle. Other organizations may be considered paramilitaries by structure alone, despite being unarmed or lacking a combat role.” (Quotes are from Wikipedia)
It’s focus is also NOT warfare, but internal security and rescue, being a federal law enforcement and rescue agency (and one of the best out there). It functions like the military and follows the UCMJ, but it’s purpose and mission set is both unique and far from the same purpose as the rest of the military, currently. It also does what most law enforcement agencies are unable to do, quite literally more applicable to the definition of a paramilitary organization.
I’m not doing this to spite my Coastie brethren, but rather to ask for a proper case that counters mine in a way that helps me understand why they should remain being considered a branch. I’m open to any other perspectives you may have, and even constructive criticism with my thesis.
