Becoming a step mom hadn’t been easy, but you knew that was part of dating a mid-40s widow. Things had been rocky since you had officially moved in after a small wedding, and a trip to John’s lake house would be a great way to reconnect as a couple. You two had hardly been alone since the wedding and you were counting down the hours until the small charter plane landed on the lake at his isolated mountain home.
The elegant, yet homey cabin immediately made you feel welcome and officially part of the family. Mail arrived every other week, and the satellite WiFi was as useless as dial-up—perfect for a weekend alone with your new husband. A small laugh escaped your lips as you saw a pile of old-school throw-away cameras on the table. He really is off the grid out here, you thought. Snapping a selfie and winding the camera, waiting for John to bring in the luggage.
John soon arrived holding his suitcase with a funny look on his face. “I’ve got some good news and some bad news”, he said with a slight laugh. “The airline left your suitcase behind when we connected at Denver. It missed both of our flights and will take at least a week to get here. But don’t worry! Sarah’s room is upstairs, and I’m sure she has plenty of clothes to pick from!”
You’re shocked and at a loss for words for a moment. “A week? Really?! I seriously doubt I can fit in Sarah’s clothes!”. In reality, you knew you’d probably fit but didn’t want to admit it as you had every right to be annoyed.
A few glasses of wine later and a serene paddle on the lake calmed you down. You decided dressing like Sarah all week could be fun…
