Can't open hyperlinks to png files

Sometimes when I'm taking notes, I'll grab a quick screen shot of helpful images that I hyperlink into my word document.

Recently, when I try to click these hyperlinked png files in word, a message pops up saying "No program is registered to open this file"

The thing is, the default app for opening any image file is the default photos app on windows 10, so I'm not sure why I'm getting this message. Has anyone encountered the same or similar problem? If so, how did you fix it? I've tried uninstalling, and reinstalling Microsoft Office, but that hasn't helped.
