Text shading doesn’t always work

Whenever I copy and paste something onto word from a website which had a colored background beneath their texts, Word always get finicky when I try to shade the copied potion back to [a] white [background]. I usually have to highlight all but one word, shade that, and then highlight that last word and then shade that. Any clue why this [stupid crap] happens? It makes no logical sense, and is honestly just dumb and incredibly inconvenient.
