How do I add to a sub-chapters number without disrupting the next main chapter?

I'm writing into an existing template that already has a chapter 4, 4.1 and 4.2. I'm trying to add a chapter 4.3. I already have a chapter 5 and onwards but when I try to add a chapter 4.3 the numbering either resets from 1 or tries to make it chapter 5.
