What are some not too touristy vacation destinations?

I have a week vacation at the end of August/beginning of September and want to do something fun. We already have done Mackinac/traverse city so are looking for less touristy type things. Camping is ok and probably preferred for my boyfriend. I don't have a certain area in mind, but we are already in west michigan. I like museums, festivals, concerts, boating, tubing. It'll be around the holiday weekend is anything cool going on or are there any suggestions? We don't plan on leaving the state.
