There's actually A LOT of mezcal cocktails in LA, but I'll be damned if they aren't all the same, boring iterations of booze citrus sweetener.
Like...fine, I get it. It can be good, but it's soooo common and there's SO MUCH more interesting things you can do with such a fun, weird booze, it drives me crazy how uninspired the options are.
That is, until, I had my mind blown by a cocktail that had mezcal and basil. I wish I remembered more, but frankly that's all that mattered. The way those 2 ingredients pair is HEAVENLY!
Even if a bar doesn't have it on the menu, ask for a margarita with mezcal and muddled basil. It's become my new fav drink that's impossible to resist every time I go out :D
Very curious if any other mezcal aficionados have discovered this glorious pairing?
My gut always thought anise or maple would combine with the smokiness of mezcal, but I've not dove into those possibilities yet...
