No photos, sorry, I don't want my face on the Internet, and anyway the rules of the sub are that progress pics must be at least three months apart. So you can either believe me or not. I discovered mewing thanks to a recommended video on YouTube. After going down the rabbit hole I realized that I had been mouth breathing for 43 years and that was probably why my chin was weak and my lower face had a slack, melted look. I've had a beard for over twenty years for this reason. I started mewing, chin tucking, and chewing immediately. I have never been able to breathe well through my nose and always got regular sinus infections. In the first couple of days I noticed a few things. The air going in through my nose stung a little, probably because my sinuses were not used to being engaged. On the 2nd or 3rd morning I woke up with dried blood in my nose. My guess is that this is because blood vessels near the surface of the skin were "coming to life" after decades of being starved. I could smell better. It only took a few days for nose breathing to begin to feel natural. This was exciting. Chin tucking hurt at first. I saw a Mew diagram illustrating how the mandible is "tied" to the hyoid. When you stick your head forward like a turtle to open your airway, your mandible stays back. So I practiced loosening my jaw and chin tucking in such a way that my mandible stayed where it was but my skull went back. I quickly realized I had been holding my mandible artificially back my entire life. Suddenly I could smile the way other people smiled, with all their teeth!
A few days ago I saw an old friend for the first time in two months, and the first thing he said was, "you look different". I could see him scanning my face and trying to figure out what had changed. I took some photos and compared them to old photos and my face has already gotten noticeably wider and more toned, almost certainly because I am using my masseter muscles for the first time. I think I look a little younger and certainly "brighter". My crooked nose is also visibly a little straighter. I can also now exercise without resorting to mouth breathing. Last of all, I am a native English speaker who lived for many years in France. No matter how hard I tried, I could never pronounce the back-of-the-throat French R. Today I was speaking French and I realized I could now say the words correctly with almost no effort. My poor neck posture and tongue position made it impossible to pronounce the R! I stuck my head back out in the "nerd neck"/turtle position and sure enough, it was again impossible. Anyway, I am shocked by how fast positive changes have begun to occur, and look forward to the one-year mark.
