For years I have watched (and occasionally joined with) the community sing the praises of every little detail of Prime's visuals and gush about how meticulously and intentionally crafted they are, and when the Remaster came out and I started pointing out to this same community that "hey guys this is now a completely different experience that doesn't have the same atmosphere anymore, doesn't anyone else notice?", I basically got collectively told to sod off. Not directly, because I imagine we're not allowed to tell each other to "fuck off" since that's not "being excellent to your fellow hunters", but to be honest I didn't feel treated excellently. I wanted to point out that I have noticed the same nuances in the game's visuals as you all over the years and have grown my appreciation for them alongside you, and it felt pretty damn awful to have that same community basically turn on me the moment I started pointing things out about the Remaster that changed a fundamental part of the experience of playing the game for the worse.
We've literally talked about this exact topic before the Remaster came out. How is it everyone's nuanced opinions on the visuals changed in an instant to "remaster good, nothing wrong with changing the visuals"? We lost one of the core parts of the game's experience. The atmosphere has been changed completely and no longer feels the same to experience. It's like a version B of Prime. Does it look better? In a void, yes. It's higher resolution, so of course it's going to look cleaner on an HD display, but does it look better in terms of mood/vibe/atmosphere? I find the Remaster to be much, much less cohesive and evocative than the normal visuals. It's not "it's bad because it's different" it's "because this is now different, part of the core appeal of the experience is gone and in its place is a lesser experience", and I think we need to be clear in communicating that to Nintendo and Retro. Atmosphere is arguably more important in Prime 2, and with the high likelihood that Prime 2 will also receive a Remastered edition, the idea of seeing the experience gutted for that game makes me want to cry. Especially since almost no one else seems to agree with me and these changes are being encouraged. I don't like feeling left behind by my favorite series and its community.
