This article about phosphate runoff from fertilizer makes a good attempt to explain a limit in river water of 0.037 mg/L (maybe 37 ยตg/L would be better) in terms of the metric system but also explains 1 ppm as 4 drops of ink in a 55 gallon drum of water.

I commend them on not using ONLY absurd comparators.
