How easy is it to make a substance sound dangerous?
Let's talk about the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide.
Dihydrogen monoxide, also known as hydric acid:
may cause death due to accidental inhalation, even in small quantities
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients
is the major component of acid rain
contributes to the greenhouse effect
contributes to land erosion
can cause severe burns
accelerates corrosion and rusting of metals
has been known to cause dangerous electrical short-circuits
has allegedly been used in the torture of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay
Most people and animals who have consumed significant amounts of dihydrogen monoxide have died.
Despite these dangers, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
as an industrial solvent and coolant
in nuclear power plants
in the production of Styrofoam and other synthetic insulators
as a fire retardant
in the production of certain junk food and other edible products
in the distribution of pesticides; even after washing, residual dihydrogen monoxide often remains on produce surfaces
Additionally, dihydrogen monoxide was recently found in main pipes of at least several major cities nationwide.
