Question about guitar effects on stage

So most bands when they play live the guitars and bass players usually have an assortment of stomp boxes and other effects pedals so they can use them when they need them. I've seen Metallica 5 times now (including the last 2- glad the storm cleared) and they don't seem to use that method. Do their techs run all that from backstage or how is that done? Other than the drums, mics and monitors, the stage is pretty clean.
