I was particularly tickled when reading through this article and just had to share some of it's silliness with this sub. I was a little offended by her quote "boys can be stigmatized for being a nerd or a geek but they can't really be too smart". I was heavily stigmatized for being smarter than my peers, and even received scrutiny from my teachers who resented me. Whether intentional or not, my being more intelligent was sending me negative feedback and had I been a spineless fool I'd have given in and ignored my gifts in exchange for social acceptance. Who does Solnit think she is to deny men that capacity for scrutiny from intelligence? Especially when in the same article she complains about how society's expectations kept her from carrying out her dreams and pursuing her interests. Wa-wa-waaa, "society and it's evil expectations", "I wish we could all be free"...cough cough "(arbitrary social expectation that defeats equality)". This reminded me of a video I watched that tried to explain how white people in America CANNOT be the recipient of prejudice, it is literally impossible as they explain it. Since white people in America owe so much racial debt to the African Americans that were enslaved and all the subsequent racial bullshit, it is now somehow impossible for a white person to receive prejudice or racism anytime, ever.
