Does Going to the Police Help Before Your Accuser Does?

Post Body

I posted in falsely accused sub about this but figured getting multiple opinions would help. Long story short my ex mother in law is trying to blackmail me with false accusations and threatened to kill me and make it look like a suicide. I was renting to her and her husband, but her killed himself, so I was trying to work with her as to not be a jerk and keep a friendship. Big mistake. Suffice to say after the death threats and threatening to burn down my house, I had enough. Despite being completely transparent and talking with the police, I still worry that they will believe her, despite her recent erratic behavior (there are other signs that are kinda loopy). How has going to the police worked for you, if you tried to preempt them making up false allegations?
