So it goes without saying that not all meniscectomies are equal. In my case, I had a partial medial meniscectomy last night to remove a large bucket handle tear that was obstructing flexion and extension.
I asked the doctor on a quick follow-up call this morning how much of my meniscus was remaining. He thought for a moment, tried his best to remember (he did several of these procedures in a row yesterday) and told me "about 25%".
I presume when it comes to partial removers, the surgeon wants to preserve as much healthy tissue as possible for the patient to have some cartilage in their knee for the rest of their lives. More cartilage is better than less cartilage.
SO, specific to my knee with only 25% of my meniscus remaining...Could any other patients here chime in, (if you know how much of your meniscus was removed), how having so little meniscus has affected you?
I would hate to read stories of people with 90% remaining and get hopeful to have as great of a recovery as them, with so little remaining for me.
I am a 36 year old man, am very active in strength training, running and BJJ. Any anecdotes would be great.
Thanks!
