Those of you who have watched the press conference of the L.A. district attorney George Gascón have surely heard him state that:
In the recent months/years they have resentenced around 300 individuals and have only had 4 of them reoffending (correct me if I got the numbers wrong), which is a very low rate according to him. So while his point and focus was to showcase the offices competence in deciding and handling these resentencings, it also gave me the impression that they are more willing and have a bigger openness to generally consider resentencings in future cases because of the positive precedent of these many past cases.
It‘s a deciding factor if a successful rehabilitation has occured during prison or rather if there is potential for a successful rehabilitation into greater society after release. This also reinforces the more “modern“ perspective and approach that Gascón claims to go into these decisions with since in current justice reform the focus is slowly but surely more on rehabilitation rather than strict punishment. Also in the case of a resentencing it will be decided if they have “paid their duty to society“. Again, this was stated as a deciding factor in these matters BUT seeing how both Lyle and Erik have integrated themselves very positively in prison and are continuing to gain respect and a good reputation by showing good behaviour, it makes me hopeful that this will result in a positive response by the D.A. office and Gascón in terms of deciding that they HAVE paid their duty to society by now and are ready to rehabilitate into greater society.
I will try to keep this positive mindset and hope my initial interpretation of the press conference will be confirmed by Nov 26th
