It lets us know which emotions the character feels. Anime and furry faces are more expressive so our under expressed emotional detection circuits actually bother to fire.
Plus it's often highly archetypical in terms of characterization and actions with stock personas and named attack patterns so it just makes more sense than the confusing and disorderly real world.
