Making a base active just for no one to raid feels waste of recourses

Seems to be happening more an more frequently to use hard earned recourses to open a base then just no one raids it.
We aren't in much control of others doing our bases.
Should we get all our recourses back if just no one raids at all? would like to see everyone's thoughts on this an is there anything the investigates you to raid a certain base?
do you prefer just to do all easy or all different do you only pick bases that look cool or do you just click whatever pops up?
