In researching LKM I was really surprised to find out that in addition to increasing empathy, reducing anxiety, and increasing social connection, there's some evidence that loving kindness has biological benefits in reducing inflammation. While the exact mechanisms aren't totally understood, it seems like LKM has positive effects on the vagus nerve and the immune system.
The vagus nerve is a key part of the parasympathetic nervous system, which helps regulate heart rate and digestion. Studies show that LKM can increase vagus nerve activity, leading to a decrease in inflammation. Additionally, LKM can increase levels of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 and reduce levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6.
I wanted to share what I found and see whether anyone has felt physical as well as psychological and spiritual benefits in their LKM practice?
