Stress, alcohol & meditation.

I have had a bad relationship with alcohol for over 20 years. Basically as soon as I get stressed or upset I turn to drink. I am wondering if meditation can help this. I was thinking that when we meditate we watch our thoughts & just acknowledge them. Could this help in real life situations that make me feel stressed & thus turn to drink? So I see the stressful even but just acknowledge it just like I would when I meditate.
