when you pay careful attention to the anapanasati sutta you will see that it is less about concentration and more about awareness. Think of your breath not as an object of concentration but as a metronome, when you breathe in the sympathetic, nervous system is optimized for perception: vulnerable passive visceral, and random. Every time we exhale (thanks to our parasympathetic nervous system) we are optimized to physically relax and mentally release. in the text, we learn that self talk has an important role to play. Perhaps, during the first three or five minutes during the inhalation you could suddenly and mentally recite “perceiving this very turbulent play of mind“. And during the exhalation you could silently and mentally recite “ relaxing into mind’s non-graspable nature.” During your second set of three minutes, you could transition to a three syllable recitation. During your in breath, you could suddenly and mentally recite, “notice this“ during your exhalation you could silently and mentally recite, “relaxing.” for the remainder of your session you could play with a one syllable recitation. During your inhalation, you could silently and mentally recite, “this.“ During your exhalation, you could silently and mentally recite, “ease.”
The more you concentrate, the more cranky you become; however the more you replace concentration with awareness the more you will experience the highest love, which is spontaneous and uncontrived. practice once every 12 hours or so and you should make great progress. be well, my friends
