Hey, i was wondering why the pope had power to allow countries to have kings? For example Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Why rulers of this state were called Grand Dukes and not kings? And did they actually called themselves that or is it western term put on these rulers. I was wondering what made state a kingdom and why rulers like Grand Duke Gediminas ir Vytautas call themselves kings if in reality their state had multiple different religions, ethnicities and people in different regions spoke different languages. Also Scandinavian rulers called themselves kings and were pagans. So why Lithuanian ruler cannot be pagan and call himself king?
