Oil change help?

Hello,
I recently bought a 2006 chevy Malibu and had its oil changed 300 miles ago. The car had alerted me to change the oil soon, and it promoted me that oil life is at 1%. Is this faulty machinery? I've never changed oil every 300 miles. There are no oil spots I'm the parking spot I park it in, and this car is maybe driven 40 miles a week tops.
