I've been watching videos on how to repair a Beetle or VW van. Are they really as easy to fix as they seem?

I've been wanting to do more than small repairs and maintenance on cars and Beetles seem like a good place to start to learn the more complicated repairs. Any VW pros out there have any insights, tips or tricks?
