Hi, I have a reasonably well maintained 2015 BMW 328 GT that is paid off and has 48,000 miles on it. My plan was to just drive it as long as I could as it's a solid car and I'm happy to not have a car. I also replaced the tires about a year ago.
Problem is my ABS sensor is broken (says me and my mechanic) and that causes all sorts of warning lights to pop up every time I drive it. The issue is, the car doesn't really need the ABS sensor to function. It's quite annoying for it to be throwing warning lights and bells, but it, doesn't dramatically affect driving in the short term. That said I'm nervous it will create other problems down the road from the systems that rely on it being out of sync.
My mechanic who I trust says it's about $2k to repair (~$500 for the labor and $1,500 for the part - and you don't want to buy a salvage ABS sensor bc who knows what you're getting).
Several people have said things like "yeah, that's a BMW, they start to go crazy after about 10 years when all the sensors start to go." and "It's fine to keep it, but it's not like you're not going to have a car payment because you're going to have to keep paying for things that are breaking."
Here are my options: 1. Keep driving it with the broken ABS sensor and just hope it doesn't cause worse damage down the road. This is against my nature and rubs me the wrong way, but might be the best solution.
Sell it with the broken ABS sensor and take the hit on depreciated value.
Fix it and drive it figuring it has low miles and is well maintained so fixing it should be a decent investment.
Fix it and sell it immediately before anything else goes wrong.
What would you do in this situation and why? Thanks in advance for any input.
